Pre-wedding Ceremonies-
Kasamdry/ Poosh Pilnaun

00:00 The formal commitment ceremony between the two families is known as the Kasamdry. The elderly family members from both the families meet in a temple where they exchange flowers as a formal agreement. The eldest aunt of both the bride and the groom prepare a dish called var - a special rice pudding and distributes it among the neighbours and relatives as the formal announcement.

Gandun
The family priest fixes the date of a formal engagement ceremony as per the Kashmiri calendar. It includes exchange of Bindi (Gold bindi for bride-to-be) and simple chandan bindi for groom-to-be and narwan (red doori), which is being done by the sisters (Bride’s sister does the dotting on Groom’s forehead and vice versa) and in-turn get the gift from the opposite party. After this exchange of rings is done and gifts, sweets etc are exchanged between the families.

Wedding Ceremonies
Maenz Aadravn
This is the startup function of the wedding. One of the aunt (bhua ji) prepare the henna for the maenziraat. There is a special container known as “Dhul” which is decorated and then henna used to be prepared inside this.

Wuri
On this day, bhua ji or the waza (kashmiri cook) make wur (rice pudding) and tomul roti (chappatis made of rice floor) on the gas chula made up of mud-and-brick in the backyard of the house where all the food for the wedding ceremonies will be cooked. Only vegetarian food cuisines are cooked in Kashmiri weddings. Wur is first served to the bride/groom, then rest members.

Livun & Krool Kharun
Livun is a ceremony that is being celebrated in order to clean the house of the bride and groom. Traditionally the Kashmiri houses were mud huts and on Livun these mud floors were made to look new by applying fresh mud and water mixture on them. Now it has became a ritual so the bhua ji of bride/groom clean the main entry gate with the mixture of milk and water with flowers and then she paint OM akshar on the door which is known as Krool Kharun. Then the painter design the entry door with lovely painting and the name of bride and groom in order to welcome them. Wanvun (kashmiri folk songs) is sing by the ladies present there and the tumbaknari is also being played during the functions.

Mass Machurvn (Baal Khulana)
This function is celebrated in bridal side only. In this function, permed hairs are opened by the aunt of the bride (father’s sister-Bhua ji). Actually bride’s hairs were permed by the family members of maternal side of the bride before a day of mass machurvn. And after this function till Devgon, brides are not allowed to tie and nor use comb on her hair.

Maenziraat (Mehndiraat)

After Mass machurvn, in the evening maenziraat function is celebrated. In this maternal aunt (massi) wash feet & hands of the bride/groom. After this ritual, paternal aunt (bhua) puts henna on his/her palms and feet. Then the henna is passed on to the other guests present for the ceremony , which in-turn give some token of money (not compulsory) following which a delicious meal prepared by the waza is served to them.
Meanwhile singing and dancing programmes get started. Family members and other guest take part and sing the bajans, kashmiri songs and play tumbaknari, natoo, somewhere harmonium is also being played or people call professional singers to keep their guests entertained through the night.
