IT'S A HORRIBLE CRIME MADE EVEN MORE DISTURBING BY THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE WHO SAW IT, AND DID NOTHING. POLICE SAY AT LEAST A DOZEN PEOPLE WATCHED A 15-YEAR-OLD GIRL GET BEATEN AND GANG-RAPED IN THIS ALLEY OUTSIDE HER NORTHERN CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL HOMECOMING DANCE.
Lt. Mark Gagan (Gay-Gan), Richmond Police, says: "The mob mentality that took place for 2 1/2 hours that allowed these young adults to behave this way, none of them were thinking or acting individually. This was a mob that took over."
STUDENTS AT THE SCHOOL SAID THEY WERE SHOCKED WHEN THEY HEARD THE NEWS.
Derrick Williams, Student, says: "I knew there were fights and all that but I didn't think someone was going to get raped at the homecoming dance."
Joe Machaeo (Ma-Che-Oh), Student, says: "Everyone's all tense. They're like, what if that happened to someone I know or what if that happened to me? I was at the dance."
SCHOOL OFFICIALS WERE NOT IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR COMMENT. THE MANAGER OF THE CONVENIENCE STORE ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE SCHOOL HAD STRONG WORDS FOR THE SUSPECTS.
Dharmendra Varshney, Store Manager, says: "I think the people who did that, I think they are animals. they are not human."
TWO SUSPECTS HAVE BEEN ARRESTED BUT POLICE SAY AS MANY AS FIVE OTHER MEN COULD FACE CHARGES.
Lt. Mark Gagan, Richmond Police, says: "Many of the students feel like, many of the people that committed this awful crime, are still amongst them in class.
