Thanks for day tripping Gold Hill, Colorado with us! Gold Hill, Colorado is located Northwest of Boulder, perched on a mountainside at an elevation of 8,300 feet. Originally a mining camp, Gold Hill was the site of the first major discovery of gold during the 1859 Colorado Gold Rush with a population of 1,500 at it's height before the gold played out and it fell into a decline. There are now approximately 200 people. It has been revived in recent years as a place of quiet and solitude.
The town contains numerous historic wooden structures some restored as well as some decaying ruins from it's boomtown days. There is a small museum, and a two room school house which is the oldest operating school in Colorado. Businesses include a general store and the restored Gold Hill Inn with a restaurant and bar. There are no paved roads in Gold Hill and only one dirt road main street. All roads to Gold Hill are susceptible to heavy snows which at times render Gold Hill inaccessible unless you have four wheel drive and chains.
