Israel Freezes Out UN Chief Over Controversial Conflict Blacklist
A major diplomatic rupture has occurred at the United Nations after Israel officially froze all relations with UN Secretary-General António Guterres' office. The decision follows the UN's move to include Israeli security forces and the prison service on its annual global blacklist of parties suspected of conflict-related violations.
The breakdown in relations was made public by Israel’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Danny Danon, who criticized the international body for its decision.
“We are done with this UN Secretary-General,” Ambassador Danon stated. “Guterres has put Israel on the same blacklist along with Hamas, ISIS and the most depraved terrorist organizations in the world.”
Following the announcement, Israel's Foreign Ministry confirmed that the country's UN mission will maintain no further contact with Guterres or his immediate office for the remainder of his term. The Israeli delegation stated that they had spent months submitting extensive documentation to challenge the allegations before the report's final publication.
Despite Israel's submissions, the UN finalized the report, which lists dozens of state and non-state entities globally. UN officials stated that independent investigators verified specific instances of conflict-related violations involving detainees. Russian armed forces were also included on the list.
The UN has pushed back against accusations of institutional bias, maintaining that the annual report is compiled through an objective, independent monitoring framework. UN officials noted that while Hamas was already added to the blacklist following the October 7 attacks, subsequent verified reports from human rights organizations regarding state-run facilities led to the inclusion of Israeli authorities.
In response to the diplomatic boycott, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric stated that the global body would keep its communication channels open. "From the Secretary-General's point of view, his door remains open to Israeli representatives," Dujarric said during a press briefing at the UN headquarters. However, Israeli officials remain firm, stating they will completely bypass Guterres' office until a new UN leader is appointed.
