The final day of the hike starts pre-dawn to reach the Sun Gate before sunrise. Early Wake Up at 3:30am to be on the trail for 4:30am with pouring rain to the check in gate. Then on the main trail just after 5:30am as the 3rd group. Another good pace with some stops as the rain eased off. Reached the Sun Gate about 7am to a layer of clouds. Enjoyed a break here with a bite before continuing on with some challenging areas of the trail including the famous 'monkey stair' as an almost vertical incline.

Continuing we reach a point where the clouds lifted and we got our first glimpse of Machu Picchu. Just amazing. We then hiked another 45 in or so to enter the main ruins to explore and grab some photos. We then exited to store out main gear and entered back in with our guide Washi for more exploration of Machu Picchu, the Lost City of the Incas. We learned about the history and gain insights into this massive mountaintop citadel while wandering through ancient dwellings, stone temples and along sculpted terraces. You could feel the energy of this 15th-century site, now both a UNESCO World Heritage site and voted one of the new Seven Wonders of the World in a worldwide internet poll.

After our time here we gathered our gear, hopped on a bus down to the main little town of Aguas Calientes to lunch and a little free time. Here we then transported by train to Ollantaytambo for the 2 hr plus ride (including breakdowns) before being transported by private vehicle to Cusco.

What an amazing and challenging adventure.
