Have you ever experienced the unsettling feeling of being wanted, but not by someone or something you desired? Perhaps someone is attracted to you, and despite your lack of interest, they persist in seeking your attention. Maybe there's a colleague at work whom you don't particularly care for, yet they constantly initiate conversations with you. These individuals are not seeking merely your presence; the admirer desires your affection and companionship, while the annoying coworker likely craves a friendship.
Can you recall a time when something, not just anything, desired you? Not for what you could offer, but for you as a whole – your flesh, blood, and mind. Something so relentless that it would resort to lies, intimidation, bribery, or any means to attain you. It's an experience no one should endure.
In my childhood, my family and I temporarily relocated to a spacious, old house in our small town due to tensions in our previous residence. Although the move was intended to alleviate stress, little did we know what awaited us. At the age of eight, I was excited about the prospect of living in the old house. Despite its slightly decayed appearance, I felt no ominous vibes as I explored its two stories. Nighttime brought the expected creaks and subtle noises in the aged structure, but overall, it seemed like a normal house. I spent my evenings playing Nintendo 64, keeping the TV on as I easily drifted into sleep. When not at school, I happily occupied myself in my room. However, my best friend did not share the same fondness for the house.
During my friend's initial visit, my dad and I made a surprising discovery in my parents' bedroom - a hidden compartment behind the wall. Being a bit of a scaredy-cat, I hesitated to explore it alone. However, with my friend and dad by my side, I mustered the courage to enter. The space turned out to be too cramped for my dad, but my friend and I managed to fit inside without any concerns. The compartment, adorned with random red and black spray paint, revealed bare plywood and exposed insulation. Amidst this simple setting, a latch door caught our attention, leading to a section filled with very grainy sand.
Within the sand lay buried army men, unfamiliar to us. My father, attempting to get a better view, remarked, "Looks like someone forgot about their hidden army men. I suppose you two can have them now." Surprisingly, both my friend and I hesitated to retrieve the army men. It didn't register much at the time, but in retrospect, it seems odd. Given our shared childhood love for playing with army men, it was peculiar that we silently agreed to leave them behind. I couldn't articulate it then, but it felt wrong to take them, as if they still belonged to someone else. Unfortunately, the previous owner's identity remained a mystery, and I never discovered who occupied the space before our arrival.
