Vehicle Diagnostics for passenger car is a 2-tier system comprising of Off-board and On-board diagnostics.

On-board diagnostics takes care of emission related diagnosis and Off-board diagnostics monitors faults in every other Electronic Control Unit (ECU).

The importance of vehicle diagnostics lies in its ability to make the driver aware of the fault. At the same time, the vehicle diagnostics system also stores the fault as a code. This to enables the mechanic to resolve the issue.
