Now it feels like India may be on the verge of a major transformation.

The Supreme Court of India has made strong observations regarding political leaders, raising hope that the country may not function the same way as before, and that ordinary citizens may no longer have to bear the burden of political missteps.

During the hearing of a case related to government spending, the Court examined how much money governments are spending and on what.

During the proceedings, the Supreme Court observed that:

The central government spends approximately ₹4 lakh crore every year on free schemes.

State governments together spend around ₹4.5 lakh crore annually on similar free schemes.


This means that nearly ₹9.5 lakh crore is being distributed every year in the name of free schemes.

The Court warned that such practices must be reviewed immediately, otherwise action may follow.

The Chief Justice further stated that it is understandable that some people genuinely cannot meet their basic needs and must be supported.

There are children who cannot afford education, and they must receive it.

It is the duty of the state to provide such support, and society should welcome it.

However, when capable and financially stable individuals, who already have sufficient resources, continue to benefit from every kind of free scheme, the question arises:

Is it not time for state governments to reassess their policies?

The Supreme Court’s message is clear: assistance should reach the genuinely needy, but those who are capable should not develop a dependency on freebies.
