Arizona Lawmaker Announces Abortion for Non-Viable Pregnancy

Описание: Arizona lawmaker Eva Burch (D) made headlines on March 18, going on record on the floor of the state Senate to announce she would seek an abortion after finding out her most recent pregnancy was not viable. Burch, a registered nurse and longtime advocate for abortion rights, said she had a miscarriage 13 years ago and terminated a non-viable pregnancy during her campaign for state Senate.

Burch also made it clear no woman should have to explain her decision to obtain reproductive care, but argued that she was doing so to highlight the tangible effects of the state’s abortion restrictions, which currently ban any abortion after 15 weeks. Burch said the state’s laws required her doctor to conduct a transvaginal ultrasound and recite factually incorrect information about alternatives to seeking the abortion.

A drive in Arizona is attempting to increase the limit on abortions to 28 weeks and include express exceptions for the mental and physical health of the mother. Burch and other advocates are hopeful it will be directly voted on by voters in November.
