4-H youth, or other individuals showing livestock or poultry, need to understand and implement sound biosecurity practices to prevent the spread of diseases between animals and people, also called zoonotic diseases. This video describes six simple biosecurity practices to help keep you and your animals healthy:
1. Protect the nose of the hose- keep hose spouts clean to prevent contamination.
2. Clean and disinfect feed containers, drinkers, bedding, and stools on a regular basis.
3. Avoid sharing items between different species or different animals if possible. If you do share items, clean them between animals. Provide separate water buckets.
4. Prevent nose-to-nose contact with other animals. Use tack stalls as barriers between animals.
5. Sick animals need to stay home. Bringing them to the fair exposes other animals and people to illnesses.
6. After a show, quarantine your animals for at least three weeks.
