The Cherkasy River Station is connected to the banks of the Dnipro River and the city's port history, which began in the 19th century. The first pier in Cherkasy opened in 1846, after which river traffic gradually transformed this area of ​​the city into a significant trade and transportation hub.
In the second half of the 19th century, the pier's importance grew significantly. In 1858, the first joint-stock steamship company was established on the Dnieper, and in 1888, another one opened, cementing Cherkasy's place on the river map as an important shipping hub. During this period, not only local steamships but also foreign vessels called here, and the Mytnytsia district acquired a distinct port character.
The development of river infrastructure intensified in the 20th century, when changes to the Dnipro shipping system increased the importance of ports. The station itself remains part of the city's image as a building reminiscent of the period when river transport was one of Cherkasy's main lines of communication with other cities on the Dnipro.
