IQALUIT, NU (June 18, 2014) -- To mark Nunavut's 15th anniversary, local music producer THOR, backed by fellow Nunavummiut, Christine Tootoo, has released a new summer single called "Calling 867".

The story of the song revolves around a boy from Nunavut trying to convince a girl living in Southern Canada to come and live with him in the Arctic - "You should come to Nunavut and stay here," he sings.

"The story is definitely partly-inspired by my own experiences growing up here," said THOR. "Travelling and studying around the world, I've had a lot of friends and lovers who I want to bring here to experience Nunavut. This song is my call to them, especially Southern Canadians, that Nunavut is an awesome place to be, if you have the right attitude."

THOR wrote, recorded and produced the song in Iqaluit and Denmark, and the song is based on Danish rock star Peter Sommer's 2006 hit single "8-6-6-0". He hopes to record an Inuktitut version of the song, as well as a music video, featuring the beautiful nature in Nunavut.

THOR, whose real name is Thor Simonsen, started out playing drums at age 5, and has been an active musician and music producer in both in Nunavut and Scandinavia since 2006. He has previously worked with many international musicians, including Nunavut's Kelly Fraser and Brian Tagalik ("The Struggle" received national radio airplay), Greenland's ANGU, and the Scandinavian pop-group FAROE5. Christine Tootoo, who throat sings and sings backing vocals on "Calling 867" is an aspiring singer and recent graduate of the Nunavut Sivuniksavut Training Program in Ottawa.
