Toys, clothes, and other items made in China are being reported in growing numbers to the EU's alert system for hazardous goods, or RAPEX.
In 2012, goods imported from China, including Hong Kong, accounted for 58 percent of products submitted by member states to RAPEX, up from 54 percent in 2011.
EU officials said the high number of products on the list from China is due to the significant amount of goods currently imported from China, and that Chinese companies are often simply not aware of the rules.
RAPEX makes sure that information about dangerous products is quickly exchanged between member states of the EU and the European Commission. Products flagged by RAPEX as posing risks to the health and safety of consumers may be withdrawn from the market, rejected by customs officials, or banned altogether.
