It’s the current TV show on everyone’s minds, and it’s clear to see why. Simply put, Jack Thorne and Stephen Graham’s new Netflix drama miniseries about a 13-year-old boy accused of murder is one of the best things to come out of the TV and streaming world in years, and also one of the most important.

Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper) is swiftly arrested and taken down to the station. His father Eddie (Graham) is having none of it at first, but the evidence clearly points in his son’s direction. The series opening really puts you on the edge of your seat, as police storm the Miller’s home in the early hours of the morning. Each episode is shot cleverly and impressively in real time with no cutaways, ramping up real tension.

The third episode is particularly intense and unnerving, as Jamie is appraised by a therapist. Cooper’s performance is absolutely astounding during the uninterrupted session, with quite startling mood swings - with Erin Doherty proving the perfect foil as therapist Briony. Each central performance throughout the four episodes in fact brings a realness and gravitas to the show’s subject matter.

Graham cited the importance of understanding why rather than who carried out the heinous crime was essential in the telling of their story, exploring a range of factors from education to family, as well as the influences of social media - each exploration in the show just as devastating as the last.
