(24 Dec 2014) Cubans are celebrating this year's Christmas with a renewed optimism, after US president Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro announced last week that their countries would resume diplomatic relations 50 years after they cut ties.
Self-employed workers in Havana, known as "cuentapropistas," are especially optimistic.
Beautician Marilyn Alvarez, who has worked in the beauty industry for five years, serving customers from her small apartment, called the new developments in US-Cuban relations "a gift".
Alvarez's customer, Alanis Rodriguez, even went as far as getting American flags painted on her fingernails, alternated with a Cuban flag design.
But some in Havana on Wednesday expressed cautious optimism for the future.
"There are many things that need to be resolved between the two countries," said elderly shopper Roberto Olivas.
