In this video I share what I use to fertilize my food forest in Puerto Rico by introducing chaya, one of the most powerful support plants I grow. Chaya is fast growing, resilient, and deeply nourishing to the soil. I chop and drop it, let it return to the earth, and allow nature to do the rest.
Chaya is rich in nutrients that plants love, including nitrogen, calcium, potassium, iron, magnesium, and trace minerals. When returned to the soil, these nutrients help build fertility, support healthy microbial life, and strengthen surrounding trees and plants. Instead of relying on store bought inputs, I let plants feed plants, the way ecosystems naturally function.
Beyond its role as a soil builder, chaya is known as a nutrient dense leafy green that has been traditionally used in tropical regions for generations. It thrives in heat, handles pruning well, and keeps giving back when integrated intentionally into a food forest system.
This is how I grow food in relationship with the land. No chemicals. No shortcuts. Just observation, patience, and working with nature instead of against it.
If you’re interested in regenerative growing, food forests, or living closer to the land, you’re in the right place.
