If the first part of Monkey Hangin’ Blues opens the album like a storm on the shoreline, then part two closes it like a tolling bell across the docks. Played at the end of Howlin’ Monkey’s live sets, it was less a song than a ritual — a slow, surging reprise that carried the whole room into silence, then eruption.

Where part one is the tale of accusation and gallows fate, part two is the reckoning: the ghost of the hanged monkey refusing to fade, still singing its blues back to the people who condemned it. Sometimes mournful, sometimes defiant, Monkey stretched the refrain until it became chant-like, the audience swept into a trance as if they too stood in the square that day, watching history go wrong.

In Howlin’ Monkey’s hands, the old Hartlepool legend is no longer just a tale of folly and cruelty. It becomes something larger, a Delta myth retold on the banks of the Tees — the blues of injustice transformed into a ghost story that lingers on the tide.

Locals have long whispered that the spirit of the hanged monkey walks the shoreline still, not in vengeance but in vigil, guiding lost sailors through storm and fog back into safe harbour. Monkey takes that whispered hope and amplifies it, turning the tragedy into a hymn of survival, even redemption.
