What is a Chiller? How it works! Explained simply
A chiller is a machine that removes heat from a liquid, typically water or a water-based solution, to cool it down. This chilled liquid is then circulated through a system to cool equipment, spaces, or other processes. Chillers work by employing a refrigeration cycle to transfer heat from the liquid to another medium, such as air or water, and then expelling that heat to the environment.
How Chillers Work:
The refrigeration cycle in a chiller involves several key components working together:
1. Compressor:
This component compresses the refrigerant, increasing its temperature and pressure.
2. Condenser:
The hot, high-pressure refrigerant from the compressor is passed through the condenser. Here, it releases heat to the surrounding environment (either air or water) and condenses back into a liquid.
3. Expansion Valve:
The high-pressure liquid refrigerant passes through the expansion valve, which lowers its pressure and temperature.
4. Evaporator:
The low-pressure, cold refrigerant then enters the evaporator. Here, it absorbs heat from the liquid being cooled (e.g., water) causing it to evaporate and become a gas again, completing the cycle.
This process is repeated continuously to maintain the desired temperature of the liquid being cooled.
Types of Chillers:
Air-cooled chillers: These use ambient air to cool the condenser.
Water-cooled chillers: These use water, often from a cooling tower, to cool the condenser.
Open-loop systems: These expose the cooling water to the environment, which can introduce contaminants.
Closed-loop systems: These keep the cooling liquid contained within the system, minimizing contamination.
