Hiking Spooky Slot Canyon in The Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument Utah. This is the second half of the Peek-A-Boo / Spooky loop trail, full trail video. Guides recommend taking spooky canyon first, then come down peek a boo but that's only because the guides have a rope to lower hikers down the 20 foot rock face at the entrance to peek a boo. Personally I find it easier and safer to climb up a rock face than climb down one so I advise going up peek a boo first then come down spooky canyon.

All Trails states the loop is 6 miles total which feels about right to me. The main parking area is roughly a mile from the canyons and the trails connecting the two canyons (spooky and peekaboo) is a little under a mile on each end. The canyons themselves are pretty tricky simply because they have some extremely narrow sections. Make sure to see if you fit between the sign posts at the main parking lot near the restrooms. If you do not you cannot hike these canyons because you will get stuck.

Spooky slot canyon tends to attract rattlesnakes at it's southern entrance so be aware of that. If the main parking lot is full there is a secondary parking area a mile down the road and that will obviously add an additional mile to the hike. I would say the hike is moderately difficult because of the squeezing, scrambling and occasional climbing but this is coming from an out of shape 43 year old. Let the video show you and you can decide for yourself how difficult it truly is.

Located off Hole in The Rock road the canyon trails are marked and fairly easily found. But the main road is a washboard nightmare. Batten down the hatches and put a lid on your travel mug because the bumpy ride does not let up very often. No need for high clearance or 4wd unless you plan on taking some side roads and it's weather permitting. Hole in The Rock is a dirt road so I imagine it's a muddy mess in the rain. But when dry, a honda civic should handle it just fine.
