Several Gallo-Roman archaeological sites are covered in this video, including in modern-day Saintes, known in the Roman period as Mediolanum Santonum, capital of the civitas Santonum (Roman administrative subdivision) and of the province of Gaul in Aquitaine.

🏛️ Gallo-Roman Amphitheater at Saintes. Its construction started during the reign of Emperor Tiberius (14-37 CE ) and completed under Claudius (41-54 CE).
The function of the amphitheater was to accommodate a large number of spectators around bloody and violent gladiator events, in the words of Roman poet and satirist Juvenal: “panem et circenses”, providing the people with entertainment and food.

🏛️ The Arch of Germanicus, an ancient Roman arch in Saintes, Charente-Maritime. It was built in 18 or 19 CE and dedicated to the emperor Tiberius, his son Drusus Julius Caesar, and his adoptive son Germanicus, a prominent general active in Germania.

🏛️ The Cassinomagus thermal baths. Originally built from a meteorite-impact stone during the first century, they are one of the best preserved baths of the Western Roman Empire.

🏛️ Temple of Fâ. Constructed in the 1st-2nd centuries, possibly with Celtic influences, as can be attested from its circular structure. It could have served to honor the Mars, as inscriptions dedicated to the god were discovered at the site.
