In this video, we will investigate the convergence property of quadratic mesh elements. When we double the number of elements, the percent error for linear elements is reduced by the factor of 4 while the rate of reduction for quadratic elements is 8. This is why quadratic elements are good enough for most problems. At the end of the video, we will learn about the energy error criterion. In the benchmark problem, we knew the exact solution and the error was based on the exact solution, but in the real-world problem where we don't know the analytic solution, we should use an error criterion to terminate the mesh refinement process. The energy error is a well-known criterion.
