It’s the last day of Freedom to Read Week, AKA Banned Books Week, and today we’re thinking about the Empty Library memorial in Berlin, Germany. This memorial was dedicated in remembrance of the Nazi book burnings that took place on May 10, 1933, when over 25,000 books were destroyed for being “against the unGerman Spirit.”
Years after the main structure of the memorial was built, a bronze plaque with a quote from the German-Jewish writer Heinrich Heine's play Almansor was inlaid in the cobblestone: “This was but a prelude; where they burn books, they ultimately burn people.”
