Inside The Graduate Center: A Dissertation Showcase

Now in its fourth year, the Dissertation Showcase is an opportunity to sample the variety of innovative scholarship being done by Graduate Center students. In this online event, selected doctoral candidates make short presentations, describing their Ph.D. dissertations in three minutes each. They will share important new research — in language for a general audience — across the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. See how, even in these challenging times, the intellectual life of The Graduate Center continues to thrive.

Dissertation topics include: how robots can make decisions, recognizing bias in potential jurors, the power dynamics of discipline in schools, the impact of cannabis on psychopharmacology, how immigration status affects socio-economic mobility, how to harvest energy from water evaporating, the country fiddle in the music of Charles Ives, a study of Virginia Woolf’s letters in drawings and words, the influence of Chinese composers on New York’s cultural landscape, and what asteroids tell us about the origins of life.

This year’s event includes a special award presentation of the Presidential Prize for Public Communication.
