Here’s our 5th “Week in Review”
This week:
Weather!! Lots of changes!! More winds and waves, but lots of sunshine too!!
We farewelled Sophie, and welcome Ava.
Emergency Drills with “Eddie the Teddy”
A flyby (cruise by?) by from “Flyby”
Some very special encounters with the South Island Robin, and some waterfront Ducks.
Stripping varnish from our rowboat locker, and preparing deck chairs.
This week has felt a little more reactive through managing weather, and yet it’s been a nice surprise to reflect on achievements while putting this review together.
Tuesday started off surprisingly rough, but we had a great time. The bar fridge got itself in a bit of a tangle, but that's just life on the water somedays!! The only breakages we had were on the shore, when I managed to drop a container load of our finest glassware getting out of the truck - classic example of trying to fit too much into one load!!
We farewelled Sophie after her spending one year with us as a part of the Fiordland College gateway program - which helps students follow their passion and intended industry. We’ve been very grateful to have her support, enthusiasm, and hard work, and wish her all the very best at Otago University. We’re thrilled to welcome Ava this year, following in Sophie’s footsteps during her Year 12.
We were fascinated to watch a pair of ducks taking a very keen interest in our docking process. We’ve never seen such active interest from them, and left us wondering if this was territorial, or just a warm welcome. The South Island Robin on the Hidden Lakes walks was as friendly as we know them to be. They’re an absolute delight to watch, and it’s always a real treat when they come right up to our guests.
Eddie the teddy got a bit wet during drills, which he doesn’t seem to mind anymore!! These drills are a great way to introduce new crew to the induction process, and to keep long term staff current with emergency procedures.
We had an awesome fly past by our friends at Cruise Te Anau in their ex America’s Cup chase boat called “Flyby”, added to by our helicopter friends saying hi - both in the air, and on the water. We sailed past Te Anau’s mobile Sauna on Steamers Beach, and enjoyed some very impressive could formations overhead. We’ve hosted some amazing passengers - as is standard for us 🙂 - and loved having Kiwis onboard enjoying their own backyard.
Valentines Day was a hit, with bubbles to celebrate the occasion followed by canapés and some amazing cloud lifting out out of the National Park next to us.
Right - off to enjoy an afternoon on the water!!
Thanks again,
Adam and Megan, and the team from Fiordland Historic Cruises
