CINCINNATI (WKRC) - He tried to withdraw his guilty plea but the judge denied his request and sentenced Jaleel Smith-Riley to life in prison without parole for killing a woman and injuring her boyfriend. Smith-Riley collapsed as he heard his sentence.
Smith-Riley shot Porshia Brooks and her boyfriend Aron Martin during an attempted robbery in Norwood in 2013. Martin survived, Brooks did not. Martin has long-lasting issues resulting from a gunshot wound to the head. A tip to Crimestoppers led to Smith-Riley's arrest two years later.
Smith-Riley pled guilty to aggravated murder and attempted murder in August 2016. He then wrote a letter to the judge about withdrawing his guilty plea but it was not known what it said. Had been allowed to do so, Smith-Riley would have been eligible for the death penalty.
During a hearing on Oct. 19, the judge denied Smith-Riley's motion to change his guilty plea. Judge Charles Kubicki then began the sentencing hearing. Smith-Riley cried and apologized.
Brooks' mother and Martin's sister spoke about how the shootings before the judge handed down the sentence.
