Neerja Bhanot, the 22-year-old flight purser, immediately alerted the pilots, allowing them to escape and preventing the plane from being flown elsewhere. For 17 hours, Neerja worked to hide American passports, calm terrified families, and shield passengers. When the hijackers began firing, she could have used an open exit to escape. Instead, she pushed others out and used her own body to cover three frozen children. She took the fatal bullets, sacrificing herself. Due to her actions, 359 people survived.
