Unfortunately, many students will experience some form of bullying in schools whether they are victims of bullying or participate in bullying another student. Before we explain some facts about bullying and some strategies to deal with bullying, let’s quickly explain what is bullying.
Bullying is defined as unwanted, aggressive behavior (verbal, physical, written, cyber, etc.) and involves a real or perceived power imbalance. Bullying can be a one-time incident or can happen repeatedly.
Here are a few examples of some types of bullying in schools:
• Threats
• Spreading rumors
• Physical attacks
• Verbal attacks
• Cyber attacks (texting, social media, voicemails, etc.)
• Excluding someone from a group on purpose
While any student can be a victim of bullying, many students are bullied because of things like race, religion, sexual preference, having a disability, and other things that make a person “stand out” as different from a group of people.
Here are some bullying facts that may or may not surprise you. Some studies have shown that students with special needs are two to three times more likely to be bullied than their peers who do not have special needs. In addition, bullying can affect a child’s education, mental, and physical health.
It is important for educators and parents to recognize some of the signs of bullying including sudden or gradual decrease in school achievement, reluctance or fear to go to school., unexplained bruises or marks, damage to property, significant amount of time alone, etc.
As part of the bonuses for this episode of Transition Tuesday, Ten Sigma is sharing some startegies and resources to deal with bullying in schools including links about the laws against bullying, links to Boys Town and Pacer Center training on bullying, and PDF’s to help guide students to understand and deal with bullying (see link at top of this description).
