In this fourth (4th) installment of my series on sugars and sweeteners and how they relate to the Alzheimer's-focused MIND Diet, I tackle the question of so-called "artificial" products such as the six (6), Food-and-Drug-Administration(FDA)-approved additives acesulfame potassium, advantame, aspartame, neotame, saccharin, and sucralose. (Only passing mention is made of unapproved sweeteners -- which category would range over things like alitame and sodium cyclamate.)
These artificial chemicals -- often termed "high-intensity" or "non-nutritive" sweeteners -- are probably the best known and most widely used alternatives to sugar. Unfortunately, like regular table sugar (sucrose), they are associated with Alzheimer's Disease and memory impairment, both directly and indirectly (via disturbance of the intestinal flora).
But, there are other options.
So, additionally, I cover the sugar alcohols (such as erythritol, glycerol, isomalt, lactitol, maltitol, mannitol, sorbitol, and xylitol); high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS-42 & HFCS-55); and the sweet proteins (brazzein, curculin, mabinlin, miraculin, monelin, pentadin, and thaumatin ).
Along the way, I touch on some of the "rare sugars" (Allose, Allulose, Galactose, Psicose, Tagatose, and Trehalose) as well as get into a constellation of chemicals known as guanidines (chiefly, bernardame, carrelame, lugduname, and sucrononate).
The entire conversation is shot-through with references to the links -- even if tentative -- between sweeteners and various forms of cognitive impairment, including Alzheimer's Disease and other kinds of dementia.
I express some reservations about the classifications "artificial" and "natural" and I pass the somewhat pessimistic verdict -- echoing several pieces of source material that I display -- there is no perfect sweetener!
