Kessel, MD, a Hospitalist from Houston Methodist Sugarland Hospital in Sugarland, TX, reviews his article appearing in the March 2026 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings where he seeks to inform the clinician of the scope and prevalence of alternative medicine practices they may be unaware of that could impact their practice. He notes patients may be reluctant to disclose use of complementary and alternative treatments for fear of being judged, and clinicians may not have been exposed to complementary and alternative therapies. Dr. Kessel recommends clinicians develop an environment of open discussion to establish a rapport of trust and suggests there is a need for the development of a common language to enhance communication during patient encounters as well as the routine inquiry of patients regarding their use of complementary and alternative therapies that could adversely affect patient care and well-being.
