In this video, Richard Dempsey presents an exceptional Aterian tanged Middle Paleolithic point made from Libyan Desert Glass, measuring nearly 4 inches in length—exceeding the previously recognized record of 3.2 inches. This remarkably large specimen was originally a functional spear point, knife, and scraper, later transformed by Paleolithic artisans into a Paleo Story Stone Face & Mammoth Effigy.
Despite tens of thousands of years of Sahara windblown weathering, the piece still exhibits clear ancient flaking scars, etched detailing, and grooved sculpting. Richard demonstrates how the artifact contains the hallmark elements of the global Paleo Story Stone tradition:
-Two human faces (young and old), carved using grooved eye lines, flaked features, and etched hair
-Multiple mammoth effigies, including baby and mature mammoths, with trunks, eyes, and hair tufts shaped through pecking and engraving
The artifact shows no signs of modern alteration—any contemporary damage to Libyan Desert Glass would appear bright and unpatinated. Instead, all weathering is consistent with desert exposure over tens of millennia. Richard also explains how Aterian tanged points, dating between 30,000 and 140,000 years ago, were often modified into effigies at the end of their practical use and left as offerings.
He further notes that nearly all surface Libyan Desert Glass artifacts are Paleolithic, with the majority being Paleo Story Stone Face & Mammoth Effigies. Unlike volcanic glass—which ancient humans reserved exclusively for ceremonial Story Stones—Libyan Desert Glass was used for both functional tools and symbolic effigies.
This video offers an extraordinary look at one of the largest known Aterian points and a beautifully preserved example of Paleolithic symbolic art carved into one of Earth’s rarest natural materials.
