Today Imbolc is associated with the Celtic holiday of St. Bridgit's Day or Candlemas, but historically, it was a time of fasting. Most premodern people ate vegan most of the time, but the Imbolc season was a time of proscribed diets as food stocks ran low in the late winter season. The coming of Catholicism to Ireland in the 400s introduced Lent which is still practiced today (and until only a few years ago was also strictly vegan). So, while Imbolc is associated with lambing, calving, and other systems of anthroparchal oppression, plant-based eating (and intermittent fasting) are more accurate ways to celebrate--and it just so happens that these are healthier for the body, kinder to animals, and more sustinable. Vegans can celebrate Imbolc by resisting the speciesism of animal agriculture and focusing on the "quickening" "in the belly" of the earth itself as life stirs beneath the surface as the days become longer. Burning vegan, non-bees' wax candles is another traditional way to honor the returning sun.
