On June 16, 1883, hundreds of children crowded into Victoria Hall in Sunderland, England, for an afternoon variety show. At the end of the performance, prizes were promised, and a rush to the exits turned deadly. A single bolted door created a bottleneck where more than 180 children were crushed to death in a stampede. This episode of Road to Ruins tells the story of how a day of entertainment ended in tragedy, and how the disaster forced changes in building safety and emergency exits that still shape public venues today.
