At AOC 2025, Mike Rudolph from MathWorks showcased how MATLAB and Simulink enable model-based design across the full lifecycle of complex RF, radar, and mission-level systems. MathWorks demonstrated how teams can move from requirements and system architecture through design, simulation, testing, and hardware implementation within a single, unified environment.
A key focus was the ability to simulate realistic operating conditions early in the program, including clutter, interference, propagation effects, and front-end behavior. Using model-based design workflows, engineers can test, validate, and verify system performance long before hardware is deployed, reducing risk and increasing confidence when transitioning to field testing and deployment.
MathWorks also highlighted RF and radar design examples, including a complete RF front-end workflow that spans budget analysis, antenna and power amplifier design, and integration with a built-in 5G software transceiver for MIMO testing. Another demonstration featured a fully specified 8×8 phased-array radar, where system-level models were flowed down to HDL implementation and deployed on an AMD Zynq-based ZCU111 board using FPGA-in-the-loop techniques.
In a final scenario, MathWorks demonstrated how system integrators can use MATLAB and Simulink with off-the-shelf hardware to create a field-deployable radar target generator. Controlled entirely through software and running on a USRP platform, this approach enables realistic system integration and validation outside the lab, reinforcing the value of model-based design for modern RF and defense applications.
