WALKS IN WILTSHIRE at ROUNDWAY HILL (inc THE DEVIZES WHITE HORSE & OLIVER'S CASTLE) (4K)

Описание: In this episode of my series “Walks in Wiltshire”, I take a 6.5 mile circular walk from the the top of Roundway Hill which is located above the village of Roundway, on the Northern outskirts of Devizes. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.

I parked my car at the free car park at the top of Roundway Hill and immediately made my way to the nearby Devizes White Horse that is carved into the hillside (where there were some amazing views to enjoy).

I then headed North along a section of the Wessex Ridgeway (and Mid Wilts Way), passing by the site of the Battle of Roundway Down (1643) until I came to a cross roads of tracks. At this point I headed west along what was once the old London to Bath turnpike road.

After taking a quick detour downhill to explore the village of Heddington (visiting the church but sadly the pub was closed & was up for sale), I continued Westwards before heading South along the bottom of Beacon Hill.

My route then took me uphill, past the infamous "Bloody Ditch", climbing to the top of Oliver's Castle (an Iron Age Hillfort) where there were more views to experience.

The final section of my walk took me along another section of the Mid Wilts Way & then through the Leipzig Plantation (the car park is on the Eastern side of the plantation).
