Part 2 continues from here.
A natural hazard is a naturally occurring event that poses a threat to a human population, causing loss of life, injury, and damage to infrastructure. An event, such as a volcanic eruption on an uninhabited island, is not considered a hazard unless it affects people. Hazards can be broadly categorized as Tectonic (earthquakes, volcanoes), Atmospheric (tropical storms, droughts), and Geomorphological/Hydrological (floods, landslides).
The level of risk a hazard presents is determined by a population's exposure and vulnerability. Key factors that increase hazard risk include poverty, which forces people to live in dangerous areas and limits their ability to respond; urbanization, which concentrates populations; farming practices on fertile but hazardous land like floodplains; and climate change, which is increasing the frequency and intensity of certain weather-related hazards.
