Craig Sellar Lang, born in New Zealand, was appointed Director of Music at Christ's Hospital school in Horsham, West Sussex, in 1929, where he wrote the Tuba Tune in D major for the colossal Tuba on the school organ. This piece is now a central piece in any organists repertoire. However, Lang wrote several much more substantial works rarely heard including a Sonata and an Introduction and Passacaglia, many hymn preludes and preludes and fugues.
This Tuba Tune is lively in nature and has been likened to the music of Handel, however the harmonic progressions in the middle section set it firmly in the 20th century
Performed on the Harrison and Harrison Tuba of Carlisle Cathedral Organ
