Ever been told you shouldn't lift more than "X" pounds?
What's up with that anyway? The number just seems so arbitrary to me.
During my first pregnancy, I was told: "don't lift more than 40lbs". It left me really perplexed.
Lift how? Overhead? Front raise? Squat? Row?
How and why did this weight restriction get suggested?
If you've ever read Ada Twist Scientist, then you know how my brain works. It just comes back around to why once again.
So, I've been pondering this question ever since.
Why are so many of my patients told: "don't lift more than 25lbs post-prolapse repair"?
Why are so many with hernias told 10lbs?
Why are patients told not to squat? Or overhead press?
Once we understand the why then we completely blow the what out of the water. In other words, it renders those exact numbers rather ridiculous!
