In the fall of 1986, Ric Ocasek was promoting his second solo album, This Side of Paradise. This interview with Mary Turner for Off The Record (Westwood One Studios) was broadcast on November 10, 1986. I've included their conversation here, including the two promo spots that were added to the end of the second album.
What stood out to me: He says that some of the members of The Cars appear on his tracks because they came down to the studio and "asked if they could do a cut." (8:58) And I think it's telling that by this stage in the game he's saying things like, "I can do whatever I want without the democracy" when discussing the benefits of recording a solo album (9:18). He's clearly tired of the band.
