CHCH is the Greater Toronto Area's oldest private television station and first signed on in 1954, originally as a CBC affiliate. The station is licensed to Hamilton, Ontario. The station left the CBC in 1961 and became independent due to overlap with the CBC flagship CBLT in Toronto.

As an independent station, CHCH became known for producing local and nationally syndicated programming including shows such as Tiny Talent Time and The Red Green Show (before being moved to the CBC). In the 1980s, the station was carried on CANCOM satellite distribution system, and thus became a national superstation; many cable providers across Ontario picked up the station.

In 1990, the station was purchased by WIC who began gradually refocusing the station to serve the entire province. These changes culminated in 1997, when the station was rebranded as "ONtv" (Ontario Television). Newscasts which were mainly Hamilton focused, now served a province-wide audience and attempted at competing against Global. These changes not successful and proved unpopular in Hamilton.

In 2000, WIC, and CHCH were purchased by Canwest Global and the station was rebranded as "CH Hamilton" in 2001. Newscasts were focused back to Hamilton. CH would later serve as Canwest's secondary television system and later rebranded as E! (after the entertainment network) and later shutdown in 2009 due to the economic recession. CHCH would be sold to Channel Zero and yet again, become an independent station.

From 2009 to 2015, the station aired a news-intensive schedule with 77 hours of local programming per week; the most in North America. This ceased when the station's news operation declared bankruptcy in late 2015, fired all their employees (and rehired some back) and subsequently restructured with a significantly reduced programming. The move attracted much controversy to the station and Channel Zero.

In 2016, CHCH sold its longtime home in Downtown Hamilton and left permanently in 2021, first to a temporary location and then to a permanent location in 2022.
