If you enjoyed Stieg Larsson’s Millennium series and, as I was, find yourself completely immersed in this one, you could be forgiven for thinking that Sweden is a dark and dangerous place. Conspiracy theorists will find much to like!
It’s essentially the story of two women, Detective Superintendent Jeanette Kihlberg, and the psychologist Sofia Zetterlund, who find themselves caught up in a web of murder, intrigue, depradation, and terrible exploitation. That age-old question – what makes a monster? – is front and centre in this book, as it ventures into some of the darkest places of the human mind, in a rattling, racing, turbo paced narrative that I couldn’t put down.
It helps to have a strong disposition – some of this is not easy reading. But it’s also meticulously put together, addictive, brilliantly executed, and 750 pages disappeared before I knew it!
