O Meien has what he calls a "Zone Press" strategy that gives him a fast-paced opening and tends to control large areas of the board. While playing in an exciting style that was difficult for other pros to emulate, he succeeded in winning titles such as the Honinbo and Oza. His ability to coin phrases and his entertaining sense of humor makes him a popular TV Go analyst and writer.

1988 was a big year for me, in which I reached the final sections of tournaments and got some valuable experience by challenging top players.
