As the Spring Festival draws to a close, I took the high-speed train home from Hankou Station, experiencing yet another year of Chunyun.

Hankou Railway Station, built in 1898, stands as the southern terminus of the Jinghan Railway (China’s first north-south trunk line). Its original European-style clock tower witnessed the late Qing Dynasty’s “Railway Salvation Movement.” During the 1938 Battle of Wuhan, it served as a lifeline for supplies and personnel. Rebuilt in the 1950s with Soviet-style architecture, it transformed into a modern high-speed rail hub in 2010.

Chunyun, or the “Spring Festival travel rush,” refers to the massive transportation pressure and congestion in mainland China around the Lunar New Year. It typically occurs 15 days before and 25 days after the festival, as millions travel for family reunions, tourism, and work. With overlapping flows of returning workers, students, and tourists, transportation systems face unprecedented strain. China Central Television (CCTV) has described Chunyun as a “rare global phenomenon of human migration” and dubbed it the “largest annual human movement on Earth.”

汉口火车站始建于1898年，作为京汉铁路（中国第一条南北铁路干线）的南端终点，其最初的欧式钟楼站房见证了清末“铁路救国”的浪潮。1938年武汉会战期间，这里曾是物资与人员的生命线；1950年代重建为苏联风格建筑，2010年又蜕变为现代高铁枢纽。
