San Diego has had a leading role in the development of American aviation. Episode Number 35 of the Rosemary Ann Phelan Photo collection shines the spotlight on the civilian side of that coin including early shots of Glenn Curtiss’ first sea planes on Spanish Bight, and Harry Harkness and Swede Mayerhoffer’s Flying Whale. Included are the Los Angeles – San Diego Airline, and T. Claude Ryan’s Flying School at Dutch Flats in the 1920s. The development of the Spirit of St. Louis, the Ryan B-1 Brougham and the Convair 240, as well as Charles Lindbergh, Lindbergh Field and the coming of Pacific Southwest Airlines are all a part of this excellent collection.
The Rosemary Ann Phelan Photo Collection is a remarkable compilation of nearly 9,000 images of San Diego and environs prior to 1950. James Phelan has spent over a decade collecting these wonderful photographs and curating this trove of topical slide shows. Ocean Beach Historical
Society is very proud to be able to host the Rosemary Ann Phelan Photo Collection.
