Harrison Ford enters as General Thaddeus Ross, a seasoned military man who has fought in every kind of war but none that have required supernatural expertise, his practical, cold-blooded ruthlessness tempered by the understanding that all of the conventional weapons he has at his disposal are useless against threats working outside of the physical laws. Keanu Reeves is Gabriel Cross, the scarred supernatural mercenary with the knowledge of demonic forces and the harsh rituals required to combat them due to his many times crossing into dark realms and surviving. He brings that signature intensity to a character who knows that there are battles that will cost you everything no matter if you win.

Jennifer Lawrence portrays Dr. Elara Voss, Banner's closest colleague who refuses to accept that the man is gone, her conviction as a scientist that Bruce's consciousness remains trapped inside the corruption driving her desperate attempts to reach him before the entity using his body as a gateway to complete Mephisto's invasion of our world. The film takes the themes of body horror and possession and applies them to a superhero lens, exploring what remains of identity once your biological self becomes a puppet for forces that view your existence as merely an obstacle to achieving objectives you may not even be able to fully comprehend. The film includes spectacular sequences of hellfire and gamma radiation creating visual nightmares as the Infernal Hulk's destruction grows cataclysmic, reality itself collapsing under the dimensional pressure making all prior Hulk threats seem minor. In the end, Ford's Ross makes ultimate sacrifice crossing into the demonic realm alone to allow Gabriel time to complete the exorcism ritual, while Lawrence's Elara continues to fight to reach Bruce's buried consciousness and give him the will to resist from within. The climatic confrontation ends in devastating catharsis as Banner emerges from the darkest depths imaginable, broken and scarred with lines of fissures across his skin marking him forever, but very much alive; haunted by the intentional unanswerable question of whether the Infernal Hulk is indeed gone, or simply waiting for the moment his guard drops and hellfire can reclaim the gateway it lost.
