In this video I compare and contrast a real Lee-Enfield No. 4 Mark I with its counterpart in Battlefield V.
The Lee-Enfield was one of the most mass-produced rifles in the world, with 17 million of them produced over its century-long service life.
There is a saying that the sun never set on the British Empire at one point; if that's true, then at some point the sun never set on the Lee-Enfield either.
The Lee was used in countless conflicts across the globe, and is even in limited use today, from insurgents in the Middle East to the Canadian Arctic Rangers (as of 12/4/2018) to certain units of Bangladesh's police force.
However it is important to remember the Lee-Enfield, like many of its contemporaries, was a rifle not only of justified war as in the two World Wars, but also of imperialism and oppression. The rifle in this video was manufactured in 1948, meaning it more than likely was not used for the "greater good" such as in WWI or WWII, but in a suppression of a colonial conflict in Malaysia.
The Lee-Enfield is an interesting and mechanically-revolutionary design, but at the same it helped facilitate the deaths of a LOT of people, and the human cost of conflict should never be overlooked in favor of the nostalgia of the alleged "better times" of the past.
The legacy of the Lee-Enfield has in part shaped the modern world, for better and for worse. Having been fired for right, wrong, and and every reason in between, this rifle design has seen and done a lot.
When you use this rifle in Battlefield V, pause for a moment and consider what that means to you.
