In celebration of Their Majesties’ Coronation in 2023, two new State Portraits have just been unveiled in the iconic Throne Room at Buckingham Palace. These incredible artworks, now on display as part of the Summer Opening of the State Rooms, offer a fresh look at royal tradition through the eyes of two celebrated artists personally chosen by The King and Queen: Peter Kuhfeld and Paul S Benney.
These portraits continue a legacy of State Portraiture, a tradition dating back to the 16th century, when such grand images were carefully crafted to project power and royal authority. They featured unmistakable symbols of monarchy, such as the Imperial State Crown and the coronation robes worn during the ceremony.
Join our curator as she takes a closer look at some of the most iconic State Portraits in the Royal Collection, from the elegant portrait of the late Queen Elizabeth II in her Sir Norman Hartnell Coronation dress to the imposing image of George III, surrounded by majestic columns and drapery - so well-liked by the King that he ordered 150 copies to be circulated world-wide!
