In 1892, after Filipino farmers in Calamba were forced off their land, José Rizal planned a bold solution. While in Hong Kong, he talked with British officials about creating a Filipino settlement in Sandakan, North Borneo. It would be outside Spanish rule and give Filipinos land, work, and self-government without forced labor or military service.
When Rizal informed the Spanish authorities, they stopped the plan, fearing it could lead to rebellion. Soon after, Rizal returned to Manila, formed La Liga Filipina, and was arrested within days. He was later exiled, and the North Borneo settlement was never built leaving behind a forgotten vision of freedom.
