From the tender age of 3 years when she suddenly picked up some tunes from her mother Late Smt. Maya Basu, music has remained an integral part and goal of Renowned Rabindra Sangeet & Indian Classical singer Somali Mukherjee's life. She started taking lessons at a very early age and later she got an opportunity to study at Sangeet Bhavan, Viswa Bharati in pursuit of her goal.Somali's advanced talim from celebrated and renowned gurus like Late Vidushi Purnima Chowdhury under whom she has picked up the nuances of Banarasi style Purab, Ang, Thumri, Dadra, Chaiti, Kajri traditions. She has taken talim in Kheyal from Shri Aniruddha Bhattacharya of Kirana Gharana.
Somali had the good privilege of taking Talims from Padma Bibhusan Smt. Girija Devi and Padma Bibhiusan Pt. Channulal Mishraji – The two world renowned exponents of Classical Music for brief periods.In the initial University days having learnt vocal classical from eminent & renowned teachers like Mohan Singh Khangura, Pt. Alok Chattopadhyaya and last but not the least Smt. Girija Devi.
She was picked up to perform in the major programmes of Viswa Bharati during her university days.
Her rendition in her Rabindra Sangeet Albam -“Buddha Bandana “ based on the theme - "Maitrayee, Karuna & Mukti" - A homage to Lord Buddha, launched at the Baudha Mahotsava in Pelling, a destination blessed by Mt. Khangchendzonga in the Indian Himalayan state of Sikkim has won her appreciation from her audiences both in India and Bangladesh.
Till date she has released four musical albums, but specially her second Album "Panamami Buddhang" - compilations of Rabindra Sangeet & poems of various contemporary poets has been launched at Chattogram, Bangladesh and was very well appreciated across India, Bangladesh and other parts of the Buddhist World. Her last released Album 'Modhyo Raater Tara' , published from Joraasanko with a collection of Tagore songs and poems and verses have been very well received.
She has been instrumental in applying the classical ragas and creating unique Buddhist Chanting for the first time for the Pali religious versus in Buddhism.
She has also arranged music for the documentary on one of foremost preature of Buddhism across South Asia – Sri Kripa Saran Mahasthabir, which has attracted crowds beyond Buddhism. This was first performed at the Baudha was first performed at the Baudha Mahotsava in Manipur, India, which has been appreciated by delegates from India and Myanmar.
She is invited to do many workshops for various Organizations & Universities regularly – where she has brought uniqueness by combining painting and songs and help training little students to love Rabindra Sangeet through imagery visualization.
These days there is a special production she is busy with , where Songs of Tagore and Indian Classical will go parallaly with the folks of Bengal and Bangladesh and North Eastern States of India.
Apart from all these projects and live stage shows , Somali Mukherjee is regularly performing live on Indian television in morning shows / Cultural events / Talk shows etc also.
She has already travelled all over India and few places abroad for live performances.
