Christmas Village, Philadelphia
The Christmas Village in Philadelphia is probably the closest you can get to a real German Christmas market in the US Located at Love Park and City Hall, the market runs from mid-November through Christmas Eve. Visitors can expect more than 100 vendors in wooden booths selling the same kind of wares you’d find in Europe: edible delicacies, ornaments, jewelry, sweets, and arts and crafts from all over the world.
Christkindlmarket Chicago
Christkindlmarket Chicago is inspired by the 16th-century Christkindlesmarkt in Nuremberg, Germany. With dozens of decorated wooden booths spread across Daley Plaza, plus steaming mugs of glühwein (both alcoholic and nonalcoholic versions) and sweet and savory German snacks, it’s a highlight of Chicago's notoriously cold winter.
Similar markets take place in Aurora and Wrigleyville, Illinois, and all have musical performances and family-friendly activities for kids, including free Kinder Club passports, which contain riddles to educate little ones about German culture and tradition.
Savannah Christmas Market, Georgia
Every year, Savannah holds a European-style Christmas Market in the Plant Riverside District from mid-November to the beginning of January. It kicks off with a tree lighting ceremony, where attendees get the chance to take photos with Santa Claus, eat festive foods, and enjoy performances.
Denver Christkindlmarket, Colorado
The Denver Christkindlmarket brings local and European food and drink, live music, polka, and schuhplattler performances, and those iconic wooden market huts to Civic Center Park. You'll be able to shop for Colorado- and internationally-made gifts with a steaming cup of glühwein or a Bavarian-style beer in your hand.
Peoples Gas Holiday Market, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Downtown Pittsburgh's annual Peoples Gas Holiday Market is set in beautifully illuminated Market Square. There's typically live music to enjoy as you peruse the wooden chalets brimming with holiday goods from handmade Polish folk art to Celtic Irish gifts.
Solvang Julefest, California
Missing Tivoli Gardens this Christmas? Instead of traveling to Copenhagen, get your fix of Nordic Christmas at Solvang Julefest, the annual celebration held in California's Danish town. Lights and decorations only add to Solvang's storybook atmosphere, and Julefest is the epicenter of the town's holiday magic. Eat your fill of festive Danish treats such as asæbleskiver (small pancakes dipped in jam and sugar) and gløgg (the Scandinavian version of mulled wine).
Downtown Holiday Market, Washington, DC.
At Washington DC Downtown Holiday Market, you can shop for locally made jewelry, pottery, paintings, and textiles. More than 70 vendors come together for this market located just outside the National Portrait Gallery.
Holland Kerstmarkt, Michigan
To visit one of the most festive domestic destinations, head to Holland, a Michigan town settled by Dutch immigrants in the 19th century. Holland’s annual 18-booth Kerstmarkt (Dutch for “Christmas market”) has gift stalls, traditional food, and artisan demonstrations. The event lasts five weekends (Fridays and Saturdays only) from mid-November to mid-December.
The Great Dickens Christmas Fair, San Francisco
For five weekends from mid-November, you can be transported to Victorian London via The Great Dickens Christmas Fair in San Francisco. You're likely to forget which century (or city) you're in as you wander the lamplit lanes of this not-so-wintry wonderland alongside characters the great Charles Dickens himself created.
Texas Christkindl Market, Arlington
Inspired by its sibling city, Bad Königshofen in Germany, the Texas Christkindl Market brings European Christmas magic to the heart of the Lone Star State. From irresistible smells to scenes that delight the eyes, the market is a feast for the senses.
