Distracted by the Stones on the Path was commissioned by Adam Cicchillitti and Steve Cowan through the SOCAN Foundation, New Works Calgary and Prairie Debut. The work was written for the duo by Canadian composer Christine Donkin.
Distracted by the Stones on the Path refers to the feeling of wanting to move forward in life but being held back by memories. The piece features back-and-forth dialogue between both guitarists, switching from rhythmic meters to slow lyrical passages. The sections are tied together by a motive that is played in canon and slowly phases over the course of four repetitions, and melodies made up of parallel fourth chords are found throughout the work.
This recording was made at the workshop of Joshia de Jonge in La Pêche, Québec. Adam is playing a guitar by famous Canadian luthier Sergei de Jonge, while Steve is playing the one hundredth guitar built by Joshia.
